Supergirl Saturday: Action Comics #317, “The Great Supergirl Double-Cross!”

It’s Supergirl Saturday! (Well, Sunday. Shhh.) We’ve got a quick one for you folks tonight, but it includes LENA THORUL, and you guys know how much I love her.
Well, that seems out of character for Linda. How could this have happened?
Our story begins with Linda and Dick meeting Lena’s new flame, Jeff Colby, at a picnic…except Jeff takes a while to turn up:
With her telescopic vision, Linda watches Jeff land safely and bury his flight suit and parachute before joining the picnic. How mysterious!
When he arrives, he makes no mention of his crash landing, but soon after makes an excuse to slip off. Linda spies on him, of course, and:
As Linda watches, Jeff makes his way to a “spy-dome” offshore full of no-goodniks:
I’m mostly including this panel so you can see Linda saying “Ye gods!” I love her so much.
Naturally, Linda can’t allow her best friend to date a spy – or worse, marry him:
(I’m a little eesh about this engagement because Lena is so young, but we already know she’s graduated high school, so…maybe getting married at 18, or 19 at best, was super normal in the mid-60s? P.S. So glad I wasn’t born then.)
Anyway, Linda decides to break them up by making it seem like Jeff is two-timing Lena…with Linda. We’re in straight-up sitcom territory now, folks:
Lena’s understandably upset and suspicious of Jeff’s behavior, so Linda goes ahead and seals the deal:
I’m not toootally sure why Linda thinks it’s better to break Lena’s heart this way – and cost her a friend as well as a fiance – rather than just tell her the truth about Jeff, but I guess it’s worse to be engaged to a spy than to a cheater? Maybe Lena’s just very patriotic.
Anyway, Linda is sad that she’s lost her friend, but glad that she’s saved her from a shameful marriage. She heads to the FBI to tell them about Jeff, and:
WHOOPS. (Also, didn’t this happen just a few issues ago?) Anyway check out Jeff just sitting in a room staring at nothing, as people do. Also, that guy is definitely 40.
Linda had better make amends, and fast! We’re almost out of pages, so the solution needs to be as convoluted and TL;DR as possible. Also ideally it should include a robot:
And so everything works out nicely, in the sense that Lena’s marrying a guy who is definitely at least 5-10 years old than her and never happened to tell her he was an FBI agent and everyone seems perfectly okay with that. Also Linda’s bridesmaid dress is hideous. But a wedding! Hooray!
And now we come to the end of an era, because in the next issue…Supergirl goes to college! Stay tuned!
