Supergirl Saturday: Action Comics #304, “The Maid of Menace!”

Fishguys and sleazy con artists are all well and good, but there’s nothing that spurs a good superhero story like a good supervillain, and so far Supergirl’s only got one to call her own. With this issue, make that two:
Uh-oh! I am seriously enjoying the evil librarian look Black Flame has going, though.
Our story starts with the actual worst day at the beach ever:
How on earth did he manage to do that without you noticing, Linda? Also, why are you dating this nimrod?
Who could this mystery woman be? And will Linda ever see her again?
…Yes. Like a page later.
Comet just loves smashing monuments! Seriously, we had this happen – for the exact same reason – two issues back. Mix it up, guys.
Supergirl follows Black Flame to her lair, where she offers to tell Supergirl her deal:
“Black Flame is the queen from a pirate planet in the future!” Writers, lay down your pens. No sentence will ever surpass that one.
But how did she get her powers?
“A cold-hearted female desperado” is good, Linda, but it’s no “queen from a pirate planet in the future.”
Heartbroken that her legacy will be thus tarnished, Supergirl flies home to seek comfort:
There’s so much emphasis on fathers in the Super-canon, I really love that Linda goes straight to her foster mother for comfort, and that Mary is the one to come up with a solution.
But this lead does not appear to pan out:
Disappointed, Supergirl returns to Earth, where Black Flame has been plotting with the criminals of the Phantom Zone – she can’t free them yet, but she has been talking with them, and they are delighted by Supergirl’s failure. And so is Black Flame…so Supergirl makes the ultimate sacrifice:
Oh no! Supergirl is powerless! And worse, Black Flame still has her powers! But how can this be?
Easy: she’s not Supergirl’s descendent after all. She’s Zora of Kandor:
Beaten, Supergirl begs for water, but Zora merely mocks her plight:
IS THIS THE END FOR SUPERGIRL???
But how did Supergirl figure out who Black Flame was?
You’re so clever, Supergirl!
And thus another supervillain is seemingly vanquished, but will she return again? Who can say?
But man, I would give a lot for the return of Lesla-Lar and Zora in the current Supergirl run. How rad would that be?
